Rotary donates Pet Rescue Masks to area Fire Stations

The Rotary Club of Avalon Park, Orlando recently presented 10 pet rescue masks to area fire stations. The masks are specially designed to be used in delivering oxygen to pets rescued in emergencies such as fires.

On Saturday, November 17 Club membership chair Charles Gowan presented the masks to Orange County Fire and Rescue Batallion Chief Tom Rullo (pictured, with Rotarian Teena Patel, demonstrating the use of a mask).

The presentation occurred at the University of Doglando, owned by Teena, during the "Dogs Giving Day" Thanksgiving dinner, which honored the way our dogs give to us.

Chief Rullo suprised the people in attendance when he said that he probably has rescued more pets than humans in the course of his work. So the new pet masks were very welcome.

The funds for the pet masks were raised during the First Annual All-American Wiener Dogs Festival, held at the University of Doglando this past July as a Rotary Fundraiser. Look for the second annual Wiener Dogs festival this February! Rotary Club President Bob Ewald says that the club wants to continue raising funds for the rescue equipment at such events.

New Interact Club forms at Timber Creek H.S.

The Rotary Club of Avalon Park is thrilled to announce the formation of a new youth service group at Timber Creek High School. Interact is the high school version of Rotary, one of the world’s best known service organizations.

Interact gets its name from the words “international” and “action,” a reflection of the fact that it exists in more than 100 countries, and promotes active service at home and abroad.

While we’re proud of the new Interact club, we can’t take credit for forming the group: Interact clubs are self-governing and self-supporting, and it was the enthusiasm of a great group of students – more than 40 attended the organizing meeting in September – that made the new club possible.

Rotarians help the Interactors in some ways, and they assist us with projects like our quarterly free Senior Citizen Pancake Breakfasts. But what makes an Interact club so special is the friendships that are formed as the students work on fundraisers, social events, and international service projects.

Our thanks to all who made the event possible: sponsors, workers, volunteers, and most of all the daschunds and their owners! And thanks to Teena Patel, fellow Rotarian and owner of our host, the University of Doglando, Campus Life for Dogs.

Our sponsors were: East Orange Sun, Washington Mutual, First Commercial Bank of Florida, Dominic Capriani and Charles Gowan. Thanks so much!
